To measure urban health it is better to analyze the quality of houses, drinking water, transportation facilities and the access to clean water, smooth roads and clean air for a vast section of the population. Kochi in recent years is witnessing increasing urbanization. The increase in the human population in the limited space has resulted in a phenomenal increase in the number of buildings, roads, streets, sewage lines, storm drainage, vehicle population, number of factories, urban waste, aerosols, smoke, dust and smaller surface area for development. They cause several environmental problems as well as health hazards. Some of the Properties in Kochi , especially those located in the immediate vicinity of waste disposal areas are thus considered unsafe for human habitation.
To maintain urban health there is a need of proper planning of roads, limiting the number of vehicles, ensuring better housing, improved sanitation and medical care. Following standard principles in town planning is absolutely necessary. Each plan for city development must keep in mind the population size. The Central Business District, residential areas, public utility areas, industrial areas, railways, roads, waterways, parks and playgrounds are the main aspects to be considered in the land-use planning process.
Environmentalists have been crying foul of the loss of the green cover in Ernakulam and in particular within the city limits of Kochi. To regain fresh air, in these times of increasing number of vehicles taking to the already congested roads of Kochi, the only option is to plant more tress and thus increase the green canopy. It is easier said than done, due to the shrinking open spaces in the urban areas of the city. Through the introduction of stringent emission standards, the vehicular pollution can also be limited. In this aspect, the Kochi Corporation can take a leaf out of the approaches followed in scores of European countries.
