Ghostface Killah, perhaps 2006’s most likely hero, has teased fans with stories of ‘Fishscale’ since the summer and has finally made an album sampler available. The Fishscale EP, as the record will hereby by referred as, is a top quality taster containing 5 tracks at just 14 minutes long. It’s a tease, musical crack which will have you hooked after your first taste.
The Pete Rock produced “Be Easy” is Tony Starks at his finest rhyming “Everytime you go up town you get gypped uh, that’s karma boy runnin’ your lip uh”. The track also shows Pete’s still got his touch with some high class New York style scratching. Next comes the R’n’B sounding “Back Like That”, which features fellow Def Jam artist Ne-Yo. Although the sweeter sound is disappointing Ghostface doesn’t disappoint with lines like “Ay-yo I should just bark on you, burn your car on you, ‘cause I’m too much man to leave a mark on you”. This is followed by the familiar Rae and Ghost collaboration “Kilos”. This is the highlight of the sampler with the two connecting to reproduce the Only Built 4 Cuban Linx magic of 11 years ago. The Ironman is once again the shinning star with Rae just about keeping up with Ghost’s lyrics. “Big Girl” the first track on the sampler produced by Ghost himself, is only short (although won’t be on the album) but the production shines with Ghostface adopting a laid back style to complement the soundscape. Finally Ghost’s newest acquaintance MF Doom lends a hand on the production front with “Charlie Brown” on which Tony switches up his flow and goes at it rapid fire over a trademark Metal Fingers construction.
This sampler complements the album’s title even more so than expected (Fishscale being a reference to Peruvian Fishscale, a potent form of Cocaine). We were all cautiously optimistic about this release and now it seems to be a certain hit. Personally I can’t wait until it hit’s the shelves. Long live the Wu.
Download : Everything, unless you want to anticipate the release date in quiet reflection.
Overall : 5 ½ Out Of 6. For what it is this is amazing. For what it indicates it is even better.
